Standards?

Yesterday when we went to the post office I didn't bother to change out of studio clothes because Proge said, "You aren't going inside, Mom."  To which I say HAH!  of course I ended up having to go in looking like I live out of a refrigerator box.

I made certain rules after I retired when I found myself gardening in my pajamas.  I get up and get dressed in studio clothes, make the bed, brush my hair etc.  When I leave the house I put on clean pants and shirt.  It always works out that I will have to do stuff  and be seen in public if I don't.  This is a pretty low bar but it does keep me in some sort of organized mode.

The Booth cartoon is one of our favorites.  A lot of the time our house looks like a Booth drawing, but we perservere.

I've been looking at the two pots below because someone from the co-op asked me for the recipe.  It's a ^6 glaze that I used a lot when I was teaching.  Both are from the same base glaze which is extremely forgiving.

It's much easier to see the variations in the rust with yellow than the mottled effect of the warm green.

The cup is one of my earliest efforts.  Because I had so much art stuff behind me, my glazing was much better than my early throwing efforts.  I did a lot of hand building then, which stood me in good stead when I damaged my wrist and could no longer throw more than three pounds.

Does anyone else have rules of behavior while being self employed?  It's a slippery slope when you have only yourself to live up to.

Sunny and colder today.  At least the wind has died down.

Enjoy the day.  As always, thanks for stopping by.............*s*

  1. Love those green glazes. Yes, self employed and would love to work in jammies all day, but I do get dressed and more dressed up if I go out.....it's the old wear clean underwear that our Mom's always told us!xox

  2. I put earrings on most everyday, even though I might not leave the house/studio for days... it sort of makes me feel "dressed up"! I prefer to not go out in clay clothes and only do if I am marginally muddy. The Seagrove post office doesn't count, most of the people you meet in there are potters.

    1. Hi Michele....I've had to stop wearing earrings in the house because Aloysius has decided they are his toys!

  3. Dearest Suzi,
Oh, when Pieter was building our Rose Suite he often had to go 'as he was' for getting certain things he needed right than. It doesn't really matter as most people know who you are and they respect you for what you are and not for what you wear!

  4. Hi Suzi,

Yes, do the same make the bed, do dishes before I start on my day.
Our village is pretty small so you can get away with shorts and a tee shirt if it is a hot day.
Love the pretty glazes on your pottery - my sister used to do pottery and I often say to her she should get back into it again.

    Happy weekend
    hugs

    1. Hi Carolyn.....It's sort of like going on safari and keeping up the standards of civilization! Encourage your sister to pot!

  6. I'm like you about making an effort when I go out. If I don't, it is guaranteed I will run into everyone I know:))

  7. We were just talking about this.
We both shower and dress everyday, as does my 85 year old mother.
There are too many folks out in their pj's and sweats--- did you just give up.
Also- we never know when some good hearted person who has traveled a long ways to find us will ask- can I take your picture?
Oh, yea, let me just take a show and get dressed first
    Also- brush teeth! Everyday!

    1. Hi Meredith.....It does make me stare to see adults wandering around the market in pj's. I've been in the photo situation.....which is why I try to look moderately civilized!

  8. Ahhh, your standard is similar to mine! :D I slip into my dog walking clothes after I get up. I used to dressed in normal clothes, and then changed to dog walking clothes before I took them... :D

    1. Hi Midori....I seem to have hit some spot with those of us who spend much time in studios!

  9. Hey! If you happen to find the rules for behaviour/dress code for the self employed, can you post it?
I think that perhaps when you realize that you might need it, its already too late (possibly?)
And also...have you yet left the studio wearing your studio apron with clay and glaze all over it, gone to the UPS store and the Post office?
The looks from that action are a doozy! boy, she's a dotty one! ;)

    1. Hi Mary....I haven't worn my clay apron out...yet. But I have been dressed nicely and forgotten to change out of my studio shoes! There were comments about walking in mud during a drought!

Perhaps we should make up our own rules!

  10. Very interesting point of conversation. It was only a couple of weeks ago that others in the pottery group I go to said they enjoy going to the shops after pottery (we're talking around 9pm) complete with mud splatters on their clothes for people to see that they have been busy Creating. I was inspired and found a reason to stop at the shop on the way home but either I hadn't been busy enough on the wheel or the shop assistant had seen much worse as I got no reaction at all. I was quite disappointed.

  11. Hi Caroline.....One of my first pottery teachers was a home ec. teacher before she became a full time potter.(Do they even teach home ec. these days?) Her former students often thought se had fallen on very hard times!

  12. When I get home I always get out of my clothes and put on something more comfortable... when I go out though I always put on clean clothes and some lipstick. Never know when George Clooney is around the corner... Just a joke. I think it also has something to do with self-esteem. Christa

    1. Hi Christa....Me too....the day you say I won't bother is always the day something occurs that makes you want to hide in a corner!

  13. My studio outfit is overalls and such clothes should always have a splatter of creativity on them. I was remembering toady about a pair of blue overall shorts that I loved to wear to school. One day a student referred to them as my play suit. He was not far from the truth but I did stop wearing them to school. I smiled today as I was remembering this.

    1. Hi Jayne.....I love the idea of your play suit. The closest I ever came to that was a pair of flamingo pink, leather Nikes that I always wore in the studio!
