Majolica Monday

This is another oldie!  In addition to glazing all the flotsam in my studio.  I have been going through boxes of pots I saved for one reason or another

This is from a Walter Ostrum workshop I did at Wesleyan Potters in Middletown, Conn.  According to my notes (Yes, I am that compulsive that I have notebooks going back to forever) We were throwing and altering ring forms.  I obviously made an oval.  The raises 'S' is formed from a coil on the back.  This was the first time I used oak leaves for decoration, which is odd because I live in an oak forest.

I've made other press forms since then (almost 20 years ago).  Because they are bisqued clay I don't worry about needing a release of any sort.

Our named day lilies have begun to bloom.  We were happily surprised to see these, as we thought they would need a few more days to pop!

We made pizza on the grill last night as a belated Fourth of July celebration.  No, no pictures; it was eaten too quickly!  I made a small loaf of bread from leftover dough which I baked on the grill.  It had a nice woody undertone to it.

The weather is in one of its mutable states.  Hot today, hotter tomorrow....a day for sitting under umbrellas with the beverage of choice and swims as needed.

Enjoy the day.  As always, thanks for stopping by............*s*

  1. Lovely glaze work, though the snake is a surprise, indeed. Guess I need to move out of that phobia, maybe. Enjoy July!

    1. Hi Barb.....Snakes give me the creeps, but this was suggested by the shape the coiled foot on the back made. I was thinking of 'S' as my initial, but the design wanted to this thing.

    1. Hi Linda....I'll try to do a post on pressed forms. We cook over charcoal and use clay or cast iron pans. I'll see if I can dig out some photos!

  3. Hi Suzi,

Your platter is fabulous - love the oval shape and the raised S is a great idea.
The day lilies are pretty - and the Pizza on the grill would be nice.
We often do this too on the wood fired BBQ and it cooks really quickly and has a nice smokey flavour.
    Happy week
    hugs

  4. Dearest Suzi,
Well, I have to confess that I too have notes from decades ago... It is surprising to find that information at present day. Even though we look at things different over time.
Your oval plate is lovely though!
Good idea for making pizza and bread on the grill.
We had a heavy thunderstorm with rain that almost darkened the day around 2:00 PM... I started baking us some dessert to go with tea later and also made a rice pudding in the oven; using coconut milk with cream and brown coconut sugar. Turned out lovely and my husband was happy. The house smelled good...
Hugs to you and enjoy your pool!

    1. Hi Mariette....I used to think I was being too much of a pack rat, but no!
We haven't had thunderstorm, but when it does rain it's like buckets are being emptied on us.
There's something about good things cooking on a rainy day.
      Enjoy the day!

  5. How interesting to look back at what you were doing 20 years ago. Lovely to still have work from then... and your notes! I have yet to attempt oval forms, and must give it a go... there is always so much to learn, and so much to do! Love the day lilies.
